Pollinate Energy is a social business with a simple mission – to improve the lives of India’s urban poor by giving them access to affordable products. With a focus on sustainable solutions, such as solar lights and improved cookstoves, people are able to reduce indoor smoke, have better quality light, use less fuel and save money.
We find local people who are passionate about helping slum communities in their area – our Pollinators. We train them to provide affordable clean energy products to those who need it the most. We then provide all the support needed to sustain the Pollinators’ micro social businesses that alleviate the financial, environmental and health costs of kerosene – an expensive, harmful and unsustainable energy source.
In our first two and a half years, we have trained 20 Pollinators who are servicing over 1,000 communities in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata, and have brought solar lighting to over 10,000 families. We aim to be operating across India’s 50 largest cities by 2020 where there are over 65 million people living in urban poverty.
The funds raised through our partnership with Intrepid will help us make these moves into new cities, so that we can help the urban poor access affordable products that will change their lives for the better.
