The Children’s Surgical Centre is a free rehabilitation hospital based in Phnom Penh. Their ophthalmology unit provides surgery and treatment to Cambodian children, most of whom will never otherwise be able to afford treatment or prescription glasses. An estimated 100,000 Cambodians are fully or partially blind. The majority, around 75,000 cases, are caused by cataracts, pterygiums, glaucoma and land-mine injuries and are full or partly curable.
All Ears Cambodia works with all Cambodians helping them to hear. An estimated two million Cambodians suffer from some degree of deafness. Over half of those afflicted are children and alarmingly, the majority of these cases could have been prevented. In some villages, chronic ear disease in Khmer children is so common it is considered normal. Of the ones in need of hearing aids, less than 1% have them. Much of the work of All Ears Cambodia revolves around helping those with ear infections, especially children. The team treats ear disease using advanced examination and therapeutic techniques to international standards. For those without infection but unable to hear well, the clinic offers a range of diagnostic services from basic tests to highly specialized ones such as those needed for babies. Hearing aids are available for people in need of them and there is a fully equipped ear mould laboratory and hearing aid repair service on site.
